Honduras: Doctors resume work after 47-day strike and government agreement

Medical professionals in Honduras have suspended their nearly 50-day strike following an agreement with the government to address unpaid salaries. The Colegio Médico de Honduras (CMH) announced that doctors would return to their posts on Monday, October 26, 2026, to restore public health services.

The strike caused significant disruptions, affecting an estimated 30,000 to 52,000 outpatient consultations and approximately 3,000 to 4,000 elective surgeries nationwide. Major facilities, including Hospital Escuela and Hospital General San Felipe in Tegucigalpa, faced massive backlogs. Upon the resumption of services, hospitals reported high patient volumes, with many citizens arriving in the early morning hours to reschedule missed appointments.

To resolve the crisis, an expanded technical table involving the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Labor, and the Ministry of Finance has been established. The agreement sets a deadline of October 31, 2026, to process and complete payments for documented and validated salary arrears. Additionally, the Ministry of Health is developing a digital platform, expected to be implemented by late 2026, to modernize administrative processes and prevent future payment delays.
