Honduras water supply remains at high risk despite Los Laureles recovery
The water supply for Honduras' Central District remains under high risk due to low reserves in the La Concepción reservoir. While the Los Laureles dam has recovered significantly, reaching approximately 98% of its capacity with 10.126 million cubic meters stored, La Concepción remains at only 43.41% capacity.
According to the Municipal Unit of Drinking Water and Sanitation (UMAPS), the disparity between the two reservoirs maintains a high water risk classification for the capital. La Concepción holds 15.717 million cubic meters, but because of its larger total capacity, its current levels are considered insufficient heading into the dry season.
UMAPS Manager Raúl Lanza noted that the city's water infrastructure is aging and has exceeded its useful life, having been in place for 40 years. Lanza stated that current water rationing is tied to reservoir conditions and that the municipality is working on hydraulic sectorization with international aid to address the critical supply situation.
