Honduran utility ENEE reports monthly cash‑flow deficit of 1.3 bn lempiras

The state-owned electricity company ENEE disclosed that it is running a cash‑flow shortfall of about 1.3 billion lempiras each month. Finance manager Aníbal Bendezú described the situation as “bastante alarmante”, noting that the deficit equals roughly 50 million lempiras daily – comparable to the cost of a fully equipped regional hospital per month.

ENEE’s total debt rose to 120.682 billion lempiras in the first quarter of 2026, up 6.506 billion lempiras year‑on‑year, with long‑term liabilities to national banks and financial entities amounting to 69.823 billion lempiras and supplier debts of 24.682 billion lempiras. The accumulated debt is estimated at about 600 million US dollars. To manage the liabilities, ENEE has issued internal bonds and is planning a new sovereign bond offering of approximately $700‑$900 million.
