Honduras allocates 140 million lempiras to upgrade irrigation districts

The Honduran Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) announced a 140 million lempira investment to rehabilitate irrigation districts across the country. The upgrades, overseen by Director of the General Directorate of Irrigation and Drainage (DGRD) Elías Nazar, target systems in the Valle de Comayagua, Sulaco (Yoro), San Juan de Flores (Francisco Morazán), Nacaome (Valle) and Santa Bárbara.

The project aims to improve water‑use efficiency, help producers cope with the El Niño phenomenon and increase agricultural productivity on roughly 12,000 hectares, benefiting about 1,500 farmers. Funding comes from national resources as part of SAG’s broader effort to strengthen the country’s irrigation infrastructure and food‑security resilience.
