Honduras seeks MCC funding and U.S. investment via energy reforms

Honduras has been named among 91 candidate countries for potential Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) assistance programs for fiscal year 2027. While this inclusion is a preliminary step in the selection process, it does not guarantee eligibility for new funding. To advance, the country must meet specific economic thresholds and demonstrate commitments to democratic governance, economic freedom, and poverty reduction.

Simultaneously, the United States has expressed strong support for recent energy sector reforms approved by the Honduran National Congress. Juan Pablo Segura, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, noted that these reforms could create a more reliable electrical system, making Honduras a “smarter bet” for American investment, technology, and job creation.

However, the Honduran Private Sector Council (COHEP) warned that political scandals and perceptions of corruption remain significant obstacles. COHEP officials noted that while the MCC has updated its evaluation methods to consider anti-corruption efforts, transparency remains a critical factor for the final decision by the MCC Board of Directors regarding the allocation of funds.
