Honduras and Ecuador schedule widespread power outages on May 21

Honduras’ state utility ENEE will carry out preventive maintenance on its transmission and distribution network on Thursday, May 21. Planned interruptions will affect municipalities and villages in the departments of Yoro, Cortés, Francisco Morazán and Choluteca, with outages scheduled between 07:00‑13:00 and 10:00‑18:00 depending on the location. Affected areas include the city of Yoro, the town of Jocón, parts of San Pedro Sula, San Buenaventura and numerous rural communities.

In Ecuador, the National Electricity Corporation (CNEL EP) released an official schedule of load‑shedding measures for the same day after a surge of sediment in the rivers feeding the Coca Codo Sinclair hydroelectric plant reduced its output. The controlled cuts will impact neighborhoods in Quito such as Pomasqui, Nuevo Barrio, El Bosque, Conocoto, Iñaquito, Cumbayá, Río Coca and El Inga Bajo, and have also caused traffic‑light outages in the capital. Authorities have activated additional generation to mitigate the disruption, but the duration of the cuts remains unspecified.
