Honduran Congress and U.S. Embassy partner on crime reforms

The Congress of Honduras and the United States Embassy have agreed to form working groups to drive legislative reforms aimed at combating transnational organized crime, drug trafficking, and money laundering. Key figures in the Honduran Congress, including Kilvett Bertrand of the Defense and Sovereignty Commission and Marcos Paz of the Security and Citizen Prevention Commission, are leading these efforts to modernize the country's legal tools.

Proposed legislative updates include addressing the rise of synthetic drugs, strengthening the Sanitary Regulation Agency (ARSA) to better control chemical precursors, and potentially creating new cybersecurity laws to prevent digital facilitation of drug trafficking. The initiative seeks to enhance institutional coordination and leverage international cooperation to improve investigative efficiency and judicial administration.

In a related development, Honduran President Nasry Asfura announced that the National Council for Defense and Security (CNDS) will be convened next week to establish a coordinated state response to current security challenges.
