Honduras launches $178M municipal machinery program
The Honduran government has launched a massive municipal machinery program aimed at decentralizing infrastructure development and road maintenance. Under the administration of President Nasry Asfura, the initiative seeks to incorporate approximately 2,100 pieces of heavy equipment, including backhoes, motor graders, and bulldozers, to support the country's 298 municipalities.
The first phase involves an $18 million investment to deliver 126 machines to 81 municipalities, specifically targeting areas facing extreme drought, productive coffee axes, and border zones. The total program investment is estimated to exceed $178 million. To ensure long-term utility and prevent misuse, the government will utilize telemetry to monitor equipment productivity in real time.
Additionally, the program includes a comprehensive maintenance package. For the first four years or 4,000 hours of use, the central government will cover costs for preventive maintenance, labor, insurance, and parts, ensuring municipalities can operate the machinery without additional budgetary strain. President Asfura also indicated plans to review and potentially increase municipal transfers by 2027.
