Honduras confirms first imported chikungunya case of 2026

The Honduran Secretariat of Health has confirmed the first imported case of chikungunya in the country for 2026. The patient is a 31-year-old freight transporter who travels frequently to Managua, Nicaragua.

After returning from Nicaragua, the individual presented symptoms initially thought to be dengue. However, following negative dengue tests, molecular biology laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of the chikungunya virus. Health officials noted that the patient experienced intense joint pain, a characteristic symptom of the disease.

In response, health authorities have activated rapid response protocols. This includes monitoring the patient’s household and neighbors, conducting fumigation efforts, and applying BTI, a biological larvicide, to control mosquito breeding sites. The virus is primarily transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
