Chikungunya detection and surveillance in Honduras
Overview
Honduras confirmed its first imported case of chikungunya for 2026 involving a 31-year-old freight transporter returning from Managua, Nicaragua. The patient exhibited intense joint pain, and molecular biology analysis confirmed the virus after dengue tests returned negative.
In response to the case, health authorities activated rapid response protocols, including household monitoring, fumigation, and the application of biological larvicide to control Aedes aegypti mosquito breeding sites.
Following this confirmation, the country has strengthened epidemiological surveillance at national entry points, specifically along the Nicaraguan border. Health Surveillance head Homer Mejía stated that authorities will monitor travelers for symptoms and place individuals presenting with fever in isolation to prevent community transmission. These measures aim to protect the national healthcare system, which is currently also managing dengue prevention efforts.
