Honduras' former president Hernández set to return as CIDH reviews political trials

Former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández is scheduled to re‑enter Honduras after completing a stage of his U.S. judicial process. Gabriela Castellanos, executive director of the National Anti‑Corruption Council, said the Ministry of Public Prosecutor will decide whether there is sufficient evidence to pursue criminal action against Hernández.

The country’s political accountability mechanisms are also under scrutiny. Deputy Mario Pérez defended the recent political trial of former Attorney General Johel Zelaya, asserting that due process and the right to defense were respected, while acknowledging Honduras must comply with its international treaty obligations before the Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights (CIDH).

Legal analyst Josué Murillo warned that the CIDH’s upcoming review of Honduras’ political dismissals and judicial independence could expose structural weaknesses. He cautioned that any adverse ruling might lead to recommendations or sanctions affecting the nation, ultimately burdening Honduran citizens. The CIDH has announced it will examine the recent political trials and destituctions, signaling heightened international attention on Honduras’ rule‑of‑law standards.
