Honduras scandals deepen as Hernández returns, 2026
Overview
Since May 2026 Honduran authorities have pursued a series of high‑profile corruption, security and judicial investigations. They arrested former Tocoa mayor Adán Fúnez for the 2024 killing of activist Juan Lopez and released the “Hondurasgate” audio that implicated ex‑president Juan Orlando Hernández in plots against left‑wing governments. The United States indicted Hernández on drug‑trafficking charges and sanctioned former president Porfirio Lobo Sosa. A police‑truck rental scheme and alleged criminal infiltration of the security ministry triggered calls for a forensic audit, while Congress labelled MS‑13 and Barrio 18 terrorist groups and created a new crime‑fighting agency. President Nasry Asfura’s administration reshaped the judiciary, dismissed opposition figures and oversaw the political trial that removed former Attorney General Johel Zelaya, defended by Deputy Mario Pérez. In July 2026 Hernández returned to Honduras after the Supreme Court temporarily lifted an Interpol red notice. He entered voluntarily to face fraud and money‑laundering accusations tied to alleged diversion of public funds for his 2013 campaign, alongside other corruption allegations. The return, following a December 2025 presidential pardon by U.S. President Donald Trump, ignited protests and criticism of perceived impunity and U.S. interference. Lawmakers questioned the use of the “juicio político” without a constitutional amendment, citing the Gutiérrez Navas ruling. The Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights will hold a thematic hearing, with former fiscal general Marlon Ochoa and magistrate Mario Morazán as potential plaintiffs; adverse findings could expose further judicial weaknesses. A municipal court in the Central District confirmed that former defence minister José Manuel Zelaya Rosales was appointed adviser to Regiduría 5 of the Libre party, financed from the regidor’s budget line, while payroll savings were redirected to the San José dam and road repairs.
