Honduras electrical sector: Liberal Party proposes energy reforms

The Electrical Energy Regulatory Commission (CREE) in Honduras is set to evaluate a counterproposal from the Liberal Party regarding reforms to the country's electrical subsector. Commissioner Héctor Corrales stated that any regulatory modifications must be analyzed based on their impact on electricity tariffs, competitive conditions, and public finances.

Corrales expressed concerns regarding the establishment of minimum prices without sufficient market competition, noting that such mechanisms could prevent consumers from accessing favorable rates. He emphasized that the market requires international tenders and competitive processes rather than fixed prices to ensure the best outcomes for the system.

Meanwhile, Liberal Party Deputy Marlon Lara announced that the party's counterproposal would be presented to the National Congress shortly. The proposal, developed alongside industry experts, aims to strengthen the National Electric Energy Company (ENEE) while addressing its current financial and operational instability. Lara highlighted the need to address the ENEE's internal structure, noting that approximately 83% of its 1,400 employees hold administrative positions, a figure he attributed to historical political influence within the state company.
