Honduras electricity tariff rise prompts fuel‑price blame and freeze proposal

Honduran electricity rates are set to increase by 12.82%, from 5.32 lempiras to 5.98 lempiras per kilowatt hour, after the Comisión Reguladora de Energía Eléctrica announced the adjustment. Eduardo Bennaton, president of the Honduran Association of Renewable Energy, said the hike reflects rising international fuel and petroleum prices that affect imported‑fuel power plants, not decisions by non‑renewable generators. He urged reforms to boost renewable‑energy investment to reduce the country's vulnerability to fuel‑price swings.

In response, Godofredo Fajardo, vice‑president of the National Congress, introduced a decree to freeze the current tariff at 5.32 lempiras and cancel the announced increase, citing the impact on household purchasing power and production costs. The proposal aims to protect vulnerable families and maintain affordable access to electricity.
