Honduras' ENEE seeks bond issuance as Congress pushes energy reforms amid crisis
Congress President Tomás Zambrano warned that Honduras faces an energy emergency, noting that the state utility ENEE records losses exceeding 18 billion lempiras a year, inadequate generation capacity and high electricity costs. He said the lack of decisions over more than a decade has led to the current crisis, stating, “La falta de decisiones nos tiene hoy en una emergencia”.
ENEE has been authorized to issue bonds worth up to 16.117 billion lempiras to pay overdue debts to private power generators. The utility reports a cash‑flow deficit of about 1.3 billion lempiras each month and aims to use the bond proceeds to settle accumulated supplier invoices and stabilize the power supply.
