Honduras evaluates raising alert levels for 91 municipalities due to drought

The Secretariat for Risk Management and National Contingencies (Copeco) has warned that 91 municipalities in Honduras may be upgraded from Yellow Alert to Red Alert due to worsening drought conditions. This assessment follows the identification of at least 103 municipalities already experiencing severe impacts and receiving humanitarian aid.

During a technical meeting on drought management, authorities noted that the effects of the El Niño phenomenon could persist until June 2027. Projections indicate temperatures may remain at least two degrees Celsius above normal, which increases evaporation and accelerates the deterioration of rivers, reservoirs, and other water sources. This trend poses significant risks to human consumption, agriculture, and livestock.

Officials are also reviewing municipalities currently under Green Alert to determine if their status requires modification. Preventive measures, including the development of water reservoirs, are being prioritized to ensure food security and water access for affected communities.
