Honduras advances cloud seeding to combat drought

Overview

To address drought conditions in Honduras, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) has implemented relief measures for livestock and agricultural sectors.

Initially, the SAG distributed over 410,000 pounds of corn silage to small-scale producers in the Choluteca department, specifically in Pespire and San Antonio de Flores. This aid, part of a 100 million lempira Livestock Production Incentive Program, aimed to prevent losses in meat and milk production by supplementing animal diets during a shortage of natural pasture.

Following these efforts, the government has moved toward a cloud seeding program to combat severe drought caused by El Niño. SAG Minister Moisés Molina confirmed that designated aircraft are already in the country, with equipment and supplies expected to arrive shortly. This public-private partnership aims to conduct approximately 20 flights to disperse silver iodide into cloud formations, targeting between 1.8 and 2 million hectares.

The operation focuses on the Corredor Seco, the Aguán region, and basins supplying the Central District and Comayagüela to alleviate water shortages in areas like Tegucigalpa, where residents face strict rationing. Implementation remains strictly dependent on meteorological conditions, such as humidity and instability. While technical experts from Startup Renaissance noted that previous projects have seen precipitation increases of 60% to 100%, officials clarified that while the goal is to increase rainfall by at least 40%, the technique does not guarantee specific precipitation levels.
