Overview

To address drought conditions in Honduras, the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) has implemented relief measures for livestock and agricultural sectors. As the drought, exacerbated by El Niño, continues to impact the Central American Dry Corridor, Honduras has launched a Flash Appeal requesting $60 million in humanitarian assistance for approximately 538,000 people. The drought has affected at least 103 municipalities, threatening food security.

Recently, the Secretariat for Risk Management and National Contingencies (Copeco) warned that 91 municipalities may be upgraded from Yellow Alert to Red Alert as conditions worsen. Authorities noted that El Niño effects could persist until June 2027, with temperatures projected to remain at least two degrees Celsius above normal. This trend increases evaporation and threatens rivers, reservoirs, and water sources. Officials are also reviewing municipalities under Green Alert to determine if status modifications are necessary, while prioritizing the development of water reservoirs to ensure food and water security.
