Honduras faces maize supply shortages due to low production

The Honduran Institute of Agricultural Marketing (IHMA) is facing supply challenges regarding maize due to low production levels. While the institution maintains sufficient bean reserves—approximately 110,000 quintals of 2026 harvest quality—the availability of maize is limited.

Currently, IHMA holds about 66,000 quintals of maize in storage, but only 15,000 quintals are deemed suitable for human consumption; the remainder is designated for animal feed. Due to low production and concerns that storing and commercializing the grain could result in state losses, the institution has suspended maize purchases. Officials are evaluating whether to prioritize bean procurement or incorporate other grains, noting that domestic maize consumption is increasingly shifting toward flour.
