Honduras declares drought alert for 80% of territory

Honduras has declared a drought alert for approximately 80% of its territory, including the capital, Tegucigalpa, due to the El Niño phenomenon. The crisis has placed 234 of the country's 298 municipalities under various levels of alert, with 75 municipalities facing the highest red alert status. The drought is particularly severe in the Central American Dry Corridor, affecting parts of Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua.

The lack of rainfall has caused significant agricultural and livestock losses. In the Yoro department, more than 29,000 families are affected, and approximately 400 cattle have died. In the municipality of Yuscarán, roughly 80% of crops have been lost, prompting the distribution of food assistance to over 1,000 families.

To mitigate the impact, President Nasry Asfura announced emergency measures including the drilling of new wells and the construction of reservoirs. Additionally, the United Nations has announced a $20 million donation to assist with the emergency, bringing the total resources mobilized by the organization to $86 million. Authorities warn that the climate crisis and water scarcity could persist until March or April 2027.
