Honduras healthcare crisis affects 1.8 million people

Approximately 1.8 million people in Honduras, representing 18% of the population, are facing significant barriers to accessing healthcare services. Blanca Munguía, Health Director of the Association for a More Just Society (ASJ), reported that these obstacles stem from shortages in medical personnel, medications, supplies, specialized equipment, and inadequate hospital infrastructure.

The crisis is being exacerbated by informative assemblies held by medical professionals, which have led to service interruptions and the postponement of surgeries. These disruptions particularly impact patients from remote communities who incur high travel costs only to find services unavailable. Munguía warned that the lack of agreement between the Ministry of Health and the Medical College of Honduras is leaving many patients without timely care, in some cases risking lives.

Beyond the clinical impact, the ASJ highlighted the economic burden on families who must seek alternative, often more expensive, medical options due to the instability of the public system. The organization has called upon health authorities and the Medical College to prioritize patient needs and engage in urgent dialogue to resolve the conflict.
