Honduras increases border surveillance after imported chikungunya case

Honduras is strengthening epidemiological surveillance at national entry points, particularly along the borders with Nicaragua, following the confirmation of the country's first imported case of chikungunya.

Homer Mejía, head of Health Surveillance, stated that authorities will monitor travelers entering the territory who exhibit symptoms compatible with the virus. Individuals presenting with fever and relevant clinical characteristics will be placed in isolation to prevent community transmission. While Honduras has not yet recorded local circulation of the virus, neighboring countries such as Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Cuba have reported cases.

Health officials are implementing these measures to avoid placing additional pressure on the national healthcare system, which is already managing surveillance and prevention efforts for dengue.
