Honduras invests $72 million in rural agricultural development
The Honduran Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), through the SAG-ProOccidente project, is implementing a $72 million initiative to strengthen agricultural production and water security for 30,000 rural households. Supported by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the program covers 88 municipalities across the departments of Copán, Ocotepeque, Lempira, Santa Bárbara, Intibucá, and La Paz.
The project focuses on protecting and sustainably managing over 25 micro-basins through conservation and restoration efforts. To mitigate drought vulnerability, the initiative promotes technologies such as drip fertigation systems, water harvesting, the construction of family and community reservoirs, and the use of mesh houses to optimize water resources.
