Honduras launches cloud seeding to combat severe drought

Honduras has launched a cloud seeding program to combat severe drought conditions exacerbated by El Niño. The initiative, led by the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock, involves dispersing silver iodide into clouds to stimulate precipitation. The program is expected to include approximately 20 flights over the next two to three months, targeting up to 2.3 million hectares, with a priority on the Dry Corridor and water supply basins such as the Francisco Morazán reservoir.

The first operational flights departed from Toncontín Airport in Tegucigalpa, targeting areas in Francisco Morazán, Choluteca, and El Paraíso. Officials emphasized that the technology does not create clouds from scratch but rather enhances existing moisture-rich formations.

The drought has significant humanitarian implications. The World Food Programme warns that up to 1.9 million people in Honduras are at risk of food insecurity. Currently, 538,000 people across 103 municipalities are directly affected. In response, the government is implementing a multi-pronged drought management plan, which includes investing $182 million to improve Tegucigalpa’s water system and providing food rations to 75,000 families.
