Honduras Parliament Advances Energy Reform to Rescue State Power Utility

Deputy Mario Segura announced that a package of reforms to Honduras' national energy system could be presented to the Congress for debate and approval once the current legislative recess ends. The draft aims to provide a legal framework that encourages private investment to help revive the financially distressed state-owned power company, the National Electric Energy Company (ENEE), which is losing about 50 million lempiras a day, roughly 1.1 billion lempiras a month. Segura stressed that the proposal does not constitute privatization; private firms already generate around 80 % of the country’s electricity. The reforms seek to address transmission losses and improve payment collection, thereby stemming the fiscal hemorrhage that has become a major drain on public resources.

The initiative is still being discussed with various sectors and within the liberal parliamentary bench to fine‑tune its content before it reaches the full Chamber.
