Honduras President Asfura addresses healthcare payments and decentralization

President Nasry Asfura of Honduras has addressed ongoing friction with healthcare unions, stating that his administration has fulfilled over 73% of salary commitments to medical personnel. The President reported that 420 million lempiras have been disbursed to cover benefits and severance for 380 retiring professionals, alongside the creation of 46 new hospital positions. Asfura emphasized that while financial obligations can be settled retroactively, medical care cannot, urging health workers to maintain services to avoid impacting patient lives.

In a separate administrative push, the Asfura government is accelerating a state decentralization strategy. Led by Presidency Minister Juan Carlos García and technical coordinator César González, the initiative aims to move decision-making, resources, and services closer to local citizens. The plan seeks to strengthen local governments and improve public service delivery through a more balanced territorial development model, moving away from a highly centralized state structure.
