Honduras records 437 social protests in first half of 2026

The Instituto Universitario en Democracia, Paz y Seguridad (IUDPAS) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Honduras documented 437 collective social actions across Honduras between January and June 2026. About one‑third of the actions (31.1%) were linked to the education sector, making it the leading source of conflict, while land, territory and environmental issues accounted for 13.5%.

Protests occurred in 18 departments and 91 municipalities, with the Central District experiencing the highest concentration (141 actions, 32.3% of the total) followed by San Pedro Sula (44 actions). The country averaged at least two protests per day, peaking at 34 on a single day. Notably, on 2 June a nationwide wave of demonstrations unfolded in all 18 departments, addressing education, energy, labour and health concerns. IUDPAS director Marjorie Echenique highlighted the data as evidence of persistent citizen demands and structural limits of state response.
