Honduras records first dengue fatality as health officials warn of rising cases

Honduran health authorities confirmed the nation’s first death from severe dengue in 2026. The victim was a 21‑year‑old nursing intern from Dulce Nombre de Culmí, Olancho, who was infected with dengue virus serotype 3, one of the most aggressive strains. She developed symptoms on 7 June, deteriorated quickly, and died four hours after being admitted to a private clinic on 11 June, after earlier treatment at Hospital Escuela Universitario in Tegucigalpa.

Homer Mejía, head of the Health Surveillance Unit at the Secretaría de Salud, warned that the rainy season creates favorable conditions for Aedes aegypti mosquito breeding, potentially increasing dengue cases. The ministry has intensified prevention campaigns, urging citizens to eliminate standing water, use repellents and seek prompt medical care when symptoms appear.
