Honduras reports 1,236 homicides in first half of 2026

Honduras recorded 1,236 homicides during the first half of 2026, according to data from the National Observatory of Violence (ONV) at the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH). The report indicates a total of 3,603 violent deaths from external causes during this period, which includes 1,018 traffic fatalities, 218 suicides, 329 unintentional deaths, and 385 deaths with undetermined intent.

The ONV projects a homicide rate of 24.6 per 100,000 inhabitants by the end of 2026, representing a slight reduction of 1.6% compared to 2025. Migdolia Ayestas, director of the ONV, noted that without additional efforts, violence levels may stagnate. She emphasized the need for strengthened prevention, investigation, and improved record quality.

Marjorie Echenique, director of IUDPAS, highlighted that violence is not uniform across the country, with certain departments and municipalities experiencing significantly higher rates than others. High-risk areas identified include Francisco Morazán, Cortés, Atlántida, Yoro, Olancho, Comayagua, and Ocotepeque. Experts suggested that public policies must be localized rather than applying a single national strategy.
