Honduras reports death of three-year-old from severe dengue
A three-year-old child has died from severe dengue complications in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. According to Héctor Carranza, head of Pediatrics at the Honduran Social Security Institute (IHSS), the child from the Los Pinos neighborhood entered intensive care in critical condition, suffering from multi-organ failure, disseminated intravascular coagulation, and multiple cardiorespiratory arrests.
This death brings the confirmed death toll from dengue in Honduras to five for 2026. Other confirmed fatalities include a 22-year-old in Olancho, two minors in Choluteca, and a 28-year-old man in the Central District. Additionally, a six-year-old child remains under medical surveillance at the IHSS.
The Honduran Ministry of Health reports over 11,000 cumulative dengue cases in 2026. While this represents a reduction compared to the same period in 2025, health authorities remain concerned. Environmental factors, including recent rains and flooding, are facilitating the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which serves as the primary vector for the disease.
