Dengue outbreaks in Central and South America

Overview

Dengue fever outbreaks have been reported in Honduras and Peru, resulting in multiple fatalities and high case counts in both regions.

In Honduras, health authorities reported five confirmed deaths in 2026, including a three-year-old child in Tegucigalpa who suffered multi-organ failure. The Ministry of Health recorded over 11,000 cumulative cases, noting that recent rains and flooding have aided the proliferation of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

In the La Libertad region of Peru, a four-year-old girl became the fifth recorded victim of the disease. Regional health officials reported over 10,900 cases, with a significant concentration in the province of Trujillo. In response, authorities have initiated fumigation, larval control, and vaccination efforts in high-risk districts.
