Honduras reports rise in road fatalities with motorcyclists most affected

In Honduras, the National Directorate of Roads and Transport (DNVT) reported 1,403 road fatalities between January 1 and September 11, 2026. This figure represents an increase of 26 deaths compared to the same period in 2025.

Motorcyclists are identified as the most vulnerable group, accounting for more than 42% of the recorded traffic deaths this year. The DNVT noted that over 10,000 traffic accidents have occurred across the country in 2026, with the highest concentrations of incidents and fatalities in the departments of Cortés and Francisco Morazán.

Authorities identified speeding, recklessness, and driving irresponsibility as primary contributing factors. To combat the rising numbers, the DNVT has implemented 24/7 operations, including sobriety tests, vehicle inspections, and the seizure of over 900 driver's licenses for various infractions. The agency is also conducting road safety education campaigns in collaboration with the National Autonomous University of Honduras (UNAH).
