Motorcycle accident trends in Bangladesh

Overview

In Bangladesh, motorcycle accidents have come to account for approximately 50 per cent of all monthly road incidents. This trend is linked to a rapid increase in motorcycle registrations, which now represent nearly 74 per cent of all registered vehicles in the country.

Data from the first six months of 2026 shows significant casualties, with the Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity reporting 1,114 motorcycle accidents resulting in 1,173 deaths and 941 injuries. The Road Safety Foundation recorded 1,342 accidents and 1,038 deaths during the same period. Students have been identified as a particularly affected demographic, with thousands of deaths reported among those aged 13-25 between 2019 and June 2026.

According to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA), the surge in motorcycle ownership contrasts with a slowdown in other sectors; nearly 80 per cent of the 5,297,279 new vehicles added since 2011 were motorcycles, while registrations for buses, minibuses, and taxicabs have remained sluggish or stalled.
