Honduras selected to host 2028 Ibero-American Summit

Honduras has been selected to assume the Pro Tempore Secretariat of the Ibero-American Conference for the 2026-2028 period. This decision, reached by the foreign ministers of the 22 member nations in New York, designates Honduras as the host for the 2028 Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government.

As the Pro Tempore Secretariat, Honduras will work alongside the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) to coordinate ministerial meetings, forums, and sectoral encounters leading up to the 2028 summit. Foreign Minister Mireya Agüero noted that the designation serves to project the country internationally and create spaces for regional dialogue, investment, and cooperation in sectors such as infrastructure, energy, health, and education.

The upcoming Ibero-American Summit will be held in Madrid on November 4 and 5, 2026. Observers note that the organization is operating amidst a period described as a “grave crisis of multilateralism,” characterized by trade wars and geopolitical tensions between major powers.
