Honduras Ibero-American Secretariat leadership

Overview

During the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, foreign ministers of the 22 Ibero-American member nations agreed that Honduras will assume the Pro Tempore Secretariat for the 2026-2028 period.

As the Pro Tempore Secretariat, Honduras will work with the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) to coordinate ministerial meetings and forums. This designation includes hosting the 2028 Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government. Foreign Minister Mireya Agüero stated the role aims to project the country internationally and foster regional dialogue and cooperation in sectors such as energy, health, infrastructure, and education.

In addition to the leadership transition, ministers approved the inclusion of Angola, India, and Turkey as Associate Observers, along with the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) as a Consultative Observer, to expand the community’s international reach.
