Honduras to assume Ibero-American Secretariat Pro Tempore

During the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York, Ibero-American foreign ministers met for a working breakfast to review progress made under the Spanish Secretariat Pro Tempore. A key outcome of the meeting was the agreement that Honduras will assume the Secretariat Pro Tempore for the 2026-2028 period.

The ministers also approved the inclusion of Angola, India, and Turkey as Associate Observers, and the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) as a Consultative Observer. These additions aim to expand the international reach of the Ibero-American community across Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean.

Analysts note that Honduras's upcoming leadership and the subsequent Ibero-American Summit of Presidents in 2028 represent a significant opportunity for the country to showcase its national identity and coordination capabilities on a global stage.
