Tegucigalpa water crisis: Reservoirs remain below 25% capacity
Tegucigalpa is facing a dual climate crisis as authorities manage both severe drought and heavy rainfall. Despite recent storms, the Los Laureles and La Concepción reservoirs remain critically low, with levels below 25% capacity. Specifically, Los Laureles is at 24.53% and La Concepción is at 24.34%, leading to water distribution cycles that can extend to every nine or twelve days.
While the rainfall has caused flooding in several urban sectors, officials note that the water has not yet significantly replenished the reservoirs because the precipitation must fall within the specific basins that feed them. To combat the prolonged drought, the Honduran government is preparing to conduct approximately 20 cloud seeding flights using silver iodide to stimulate rainfall across approximately 2 million hectares, prioritizing the Dry Corridor and key agricultural regions.
