Animal welfare activists urge cage-free systems in Indonesia

Animal welfare activists are calling for a transition to cage-free systems in Indonesia's poultry industry. During a discussion held in Bandung, Act for Farmed Animals (AFFA) highlighted the welfare concerns regarding the widespread use of battery cages for laying hens.

Arie Rostika Utami, Executive Director of AFFA, stated that more than 90 percent of laying hen farms in Indonesia currently utilize the battery cage system. This method involves small, individual cells that severely restrict the birds' movement, preventing them from performing natural behaviors such as flapping their wings.
