Indonesia cage-free egg production advocacy

Animal welfare activists, led by the organization Act For Farmed Animals (AFFA), are advocating for a transition from battery cage systems to cage-free egg production in Indonesia.

In early September 2026, AFFA launched the ‘Beyond the Cage’ exhibition in Jakarta to educate the public on the lives of laying hens and the benefits of cage-free alternatives. During the event, the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture’s Directorate General of Livestock and Animal Health noted that while improving animal welfare is linked to food safety, zoonotic disease prevention, and climate change mitigation, any transition must be gradual and based on scientific evidence. Officials highlighted that shifting production systems requires significant adjustments regarding infrastructure, costs, and technical knowledge.

Following these efforts, activists in Bandung emphasized the scale of the issue, noting that more than 90 percent of laying hen farms in Indonesia currently utilize battery cage systems. These systems involve small, individual cells that restrict birds from performing natural behaviors, such as flapping their wings.
