Honey fungus in Oregon identified as world's largest organism

The world's largest organism is identified as the honey fungus (Armillaria ostoyae), with a massive specimen located in the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, USA. This organism covers approximately 9 square kilometers and is estimated to weigh between 7.5 and 35 tons. Its immense size is attributed to an extensive underground mycelium network that connects multiple visible mushrooms into a single individual.

In terms of individual fruiting bodies, the Phellinus ellipsoideus, a type of polypore, has also set significant records. A specimen found on Hainan Island in 2010 measured 1085 cm in length and was estimated to weigh between 400 and 500 kilograms. Additionally, a large specimen of Laetiporus รวมถึง (chicken of the woods) was recorded in Spain in 2019.
