Records of massive fungal organisms
Overview
Reports have identified massive fungal specimens that hold significant biological records. In the Blue Mountains of eastern Oregon, USA, the honey fungus (Armillaria ostoyae) has been identified as the world’s largest organism. This specimen covers approximately 9 square kilometers through an extensive underground mycelium network and is estimated to weigh between 7.5 and 35 tons.
In contrast to the underground expansion of the honey fungus, individual fruiting bodies have also reached record sizes. A specimen of Phellinus ellipsoideus discovered on Hainan Island, China, measured approximately 10.85 meters in length and weighed between 400 and 500 kilograms.
