Honeywell and DIU test GPS-free quantum magnetic navigation

Honeywell Aerospace and the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) have successfully completed a flight test of a quantum-sensor-based magnetic navigation system, known as MagNav. During the test, an Embraer 170 aircraft flew a round trip from Everett Paine Field near Seattle to the Gulf of Alaska and back, covering the Pacific Ocean for 4 hours and 23 minutes without the use of GPS.

The MagNav system utilizes quantum magnetometers to detect subtle variations in the Earth’s magnetic field caused by the composition of the planet’s crust. By cross-referencing these readings against a magnetic map, the system can pinpoint an aircraft's location. Because the signal is derived from the ground rather than satellites, the DIU claims the technology is resistant to jamming and spoofing.

According to the DIU, the experimental system provided position accuracy that was 89% better than conventional backup navigation methods. Notably, pilots accessed the navigation interface via standard tablets rather than through integrated aircraft avionics, suggesting the technology could be implemented without extensive cockpit overhauls. The MagNav program, originally launched in spring 2024, aims to transition quantum sensing from research to practical military and aviation applications.
