DIU and Honeywell quantum navigation testing

Overview

The Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) and Honeywell Aerospace successfully conducted a flight test of MagNav, a quantum-sensor-based magnetic navigation system. During the test, an Embraer 170 aircraft completed a 4-hour and 23-minute round trip from the Seattle area to the Gulf of Alaska without utilizing GPS.

The MagNav system employs quantum magnetometers to detect variations in the Earth’s magnetic field, cross-referencing these readings against magnetic maps to determine location. This method is intended to be resistant to jamming or spoofing by hostile forces. The DIU reported that the prototype achieved position accuracy 89% better than traditional backup methods, such as inertial sensors.

A significant aspect of the test was the ability for pilots to access navigation data via standard tablets, indicating the technology could potentially be integrated without requiring extensive aircraft cockpit redesigns. Following this successful demonstration, the DIU and Honeywell intend to conduct follow-on testing using a U.S. Air Force C-17 Globemaster III to evaluate the sensors in a larger operational environment.
