Hong Kong authorities report illegal fireworks and wax melting during Mid-Autumn Festival
During the Mid-Autumn Festival, multiple incidents of illegal fireworks and dangerous “wax melting” activities were reported across various locations in Hong Kong, raising significant public safety concerns.
Videos circulating online showed fireworks being discharged near highways in areas such as Tai Po, posing risks of wildfires and traffic accidents due to falling debris. In other locations, crowds including children gathered in close proximity to fireworks displays in playgrounds, creating a risk of injury from high-temperature fragments.
In Po Kong Park, Tseung Kwan O, witnesses observed children engaging in “wax melting”—the practice of heating wax in metal tins—without adult supervision. This activity carries risks of severe burns and fire hazards.
Authorities, including the police and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, have increased patrols to enforce regulations. Under the Dangerous Goods Ordinance, the illegal use of fireworks can result in a fine of up to HK$200,000 and imprisonment for up to 12 months.
