Hong Kong cultural and sporting event calendar

Overview

Hong Kong has scheduled a series of cultural and sporting events throughout the summer and autumn of 2026. In July, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department launched the International Arts Carnival 2026, which includes the interactive “IMAGINE! PLAY!” exhibition. Concurrently, Tai Kwun hosted the “Better Together – Partnering Up for Hong Kong Movies” exhibition, a summer show curated by Sunny Chan Wing-san to celebrate local cinema.

The autumn calendar is highlighted by the Mid-Autumn Festival. The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) launched the inaugural “International Lantern Spectacular” at Victoria Park, featuring over 3,000 lanterns from more than 20 countries and regions. HKTB Chairman Dr. Peter Lam stated the initiative aims to create a “large-scale international festive experience.”

Due to massive crowds and high public demand, which resulted in wait times of up to two hours during peak periods, organizers have extended the “World Lantern Boulevard” exhibition. Originally scheduled to conclude on September 27, the event will now remain open until October 4. Notable displays include silk lanterns from Jinzhou, South Korea; colorful fabric lanterns from Brazil; and Polish lanterns featuring traditional paper-cutting techniques.

To support festivities, mooncake stalls operated at Victoria Park from 17 to 20 September in collaboration with Po Leung Kuk. Traditional celebrations included the 147th Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance from 24 to 26 September. As the Mid-Autumn Festival and National Day holidays approached, authorities in mainland China and Hong Kong issued travel advisories. During the festival, authorities reported public safety concerns regarding illegal fireworks and dangerous “wax melting” activities.
