Hong Kong exports surge 53% driven by AI technology demand
Hong Kong's merchandise exports surged by 53% year-on-year in August to $667.9 billion, driven primarily by robust global demand for artificial intelligence (AI) related electronic products. For the first eight months of the year, total exports grew by 42.5%.
The Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) has significantly raised its 2026 export growth forecast to a range of 42% to 47%. This upward revision follows unexpected strength in demand for semiconductors, memory chips, computer components, and telecommunications equipment.
Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po noted that AI and technological innovation are providing new momentum for the economy. Based on recent data, the government has expressed confidence in reaching a revised annual GDP growth target of 3.5% to 4.5%.
