AI electronics demand driving regional export growth

Overview

Regional export markets in Singapore and Hong Kong have experienced significant growth driven by demand for artificial intelligence technologies and electronic components.

In Singapore, exports rose 46.2% in August, largely due to a 131.8% increase in electronics exports, including integrated circuits and personal computers. This period also saw a rise in global cross-border payment flows, particularly within Asia and between Taiwan and Singapore.

In Hong Kong, the surge in merchandise exports has continued. In August, goods exports rose 53% year-on-year to $667.9 billion, marking the nineteenth consecutive month of double-digit growth. Electronics accounted for approximately 80% of total exports during the first eight months of 2026, driven by semiconductors, memory chips, computer components, and telecommunications equipment. Major markets fueling this expansion include the Chinese Mainland, ASEAN, and the United States.

Following this performance, the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) revised its 2026 export growth forecast upward to a range of 42% to 47%. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po noted that AI and technological innovation are providing “new momentum for the economy,” leading the government to express confidence in reaching a revised annual GDP growth target of 3.5% to 4.5%.

Despite the positive economic outlook, emerging challenges have been identified. While HSBC Private Banking reports that 58% of Hong Kong entrepreneurs expect AI adoption to drive hiring over the next two years, a Deloitte report indicates a critical skill gap in corporate governance. Specifically, less than 1% of directors at major listed companies possess backgrounds in IT, AI, or cybersecurity.
