Hong Kong Government to acquire HK 2 billion fire insurance claim rights for Wang Fuk Court

A special owners’ meeting was held on 19 July 2026 for Wang Fuk Court, the Tai Po housing estate devastated by a November fire that killed 168 people and displaced thousands. Government‑appointed manager Hop On Management reported that the administration will acquire the HK$2 billion fire insurance claim rights from China Taiping Insurance, pending the findings of an independent committee before any liability can be determined.

Residents expressed frustration at the six‑hour meeting, describing it as “pointless” and saying Hop On “evaded all questions”. They sought answers on why they could not return to their flats and on the terms of government buy‑back offers. Hop On redirected inquiries to social‑welfare officials and urged a follow‑up meeting in two months. The estate remains cordoned off while the government prepares the insurance acquisition and further assistance for displaced owners.
