Hong Kong government to release Wang Fook Yuen fire investigation report

The independent investigation report into the Wang Fook Yuen fire, which claimed 168 lives, has been submitted to the Chief Executive. The report follows a ten-month investigation involving 30 hearings and the review of over one million files.

In response to the findings, the government is expected to announce a series of comprehensive reforms. Key measures include criminalizing bid-rigging in building maintenance projects, reforming the regulatory framework for major repairs, and significantly increasing fines for violations. The government also plans to amend the Buildings Ordinance, the Building Management Ordinance, and the Fire Safety Ordinance.

To ensure the implementation of these reforms, a steering committee led by the Chief Secretary for Administration will be established. This committee will oversee the review of the commission's recommendations and monitor the progress of legislative amendments and regulatory improvements.
