Hong Kong heavy rain triggers flooding and large‑scale emergency response

A yellow rain warning was issued by the Hong Kong Observatory at 6:10 a.m. on 2 August and remained in force for nearly seven hours before being lifted at 1 p.m. The downpour produced up to 100 mm of rain in parts of the New Territories, causing flooding in North, Yuen Long, Tai Po and Sai Kung districts.

In Yuen Long, the Xin Xin Farm’s sunflower fields were completely submerged, prompting the farm to post photos of the inundation. The Hong Kong Drainage Services Department deployed more than 60 emergency response teams to clear blocked drainage points, inspect 240 vulnerable sites and assist affected residents. Five flood incidents were confirmed, including at Shek Shan Village parking lot and Fan Kam Road, which were cleared within one to two hours with the aid of high‑capacity drainage machines.

The weather was driven by a broad low‑pressure system affecting Guangdong and the South China Sea, as well as nearby tropical depressions near Luzon and the western Pacific, which are expected to bring further rain later in the week.
