Hong Kong rainstorm flooding response

Overview

In late May 2026 a red rainstorm warning triggered flash flooding on Tuen Mun Road near Tai Lam. Water entered buses and a vehicle interior before drainage crews cleared the road and surrounding areas within one to two hours.

Two weeks later, on 2 August, a yellow rain warning brought up to 100 mm of rain to the New Territories, flooding multiple districts and a farm’s sunflower fields. The Drainage Services Department mobilised over 60 emergency teams, inspected 240 vulnerable sites and cleared five flood incidents, again within one to two hours. The events show a progression from an isolated flash‑flood incident to a broader, coordinated emergency response to heavy rain across Hong Kong.
